Bay City Players is proud to present the following shows celebrating their 100th Season:
First up is Nice Work If You Can Get It, a new Gershwin musical about all the good things in life – music, laughter and falling in love. One of Broadway’s most successful cocktails! Mix George and Ira Gershwin’s music with upper class snobs and comic crooks, add plenty of 1920s bathtub gin, stir wildly and you have a stage filled with delightful nonsense loaded with great music, dancing and comedy.
Next, just in time for the holidays A Christmas Story. What makes for a successful Christmas? A pink bunny suit? A leggy table lamp? A grouchy Santa? No? Well, how about a genuine Red Ryder BB gun? Yes, yes! That’s it! This season enjoy the quirky innocence and nostalgic warmth of this super successful movie when it comes to life on our stage. Nine-year old Ralphie takes on the school bully, a very cold flag pole, and the constant response: “You’ll shoot your eye out” to have his most successful Christmas ever. The perfect holiday treat for the entire family.
Then, Calendar Girls tells the true story of eleven middle-aged women who bare all for a great cause. But what happens when the ladies become a media sensation? Simple enough – six women want to raise money for a new sofa in their hospital waiting room. Now, how do they do that? Well, there are all these hot men calendars out there, why not? Who cares if they may not be the hottest of women? The press latches on to the idea. The community can hardly wait. Success looms on the horizon until some hidden feelings surface amongst the women and “respectable” community members step in. Very funny, very loving, and very moving. A cheerful feel-good play: perfect for the heart of a Michigan winter.
Our next show, On Golden Pond, is the touching, funny and warmly perceptive study of a spirited and lovable elderly couple facing their twilight years. What makes a successful marriage? Norman and Ethel should know after 48 years. What makes for a successful parent/child relationship? Chelsea and Norman have yet to find out, but Norman and Billy learn it right away. Come spend some time on Golden Pond. Watch Norman and Tehel live the answers to the eternal questions: how do I make a success of living with others? One of America’s most beloved plays still speaks to our minds and hearts. You’ll love it.
Finally, our last show of Season 100 needs no introduction. Annie, one of our longest running and most loved shows, is the cherry on top of an outstanding season! Truly one of the most popular musicals in America; the songs, the comedy, and the eternal optimism still fill the audience with tomorrow’s sunshine today. For those who don’t know, little orphan Annie finds a way to make friends with Daddy Warbucks – a millionaire – in the middle of the 30’s depression. Trouble sets in. The president of the U.S. is visited. And Annie somehow succeeds in make it all wonderful in the end. And the music: “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” ” I Don’t Need Anyone But You”, “Tomorrow,” and more! Winner of seven Tony Awards, this is entertainment for the whole family.
